At 10:30 a.m. and with several degrees below zero, about twenty neighbors registered for\u00a0the guided community outing to learn about the life of the huemul<\/strong>\u00a0in the field began to gather outside the Aluen radio station in\u00a0Villa Cerro Castillo<\/strong>. A species in danger of extinction and of which only 1500 specimens remain, 1% of its original population.<\/p>\n

We had the help and participation of\u00a0Conaf park ranger Tomas Orme\u00f1o<\/strong>, in addition to the\u00a0ranger of Rewilding Chile Foundation, Rody Alvarez<\/strong>, who led this visit to the sector of\u00a0Las Horquetas<\/strong>, where the\u00a0first Huemul Rescue and Reproduction Center will be built<\/strong>\u00a0in Aysen. After going a couple of meters into the snow, nature gave a beautiful spectacle to those who, despite the low temperatures, went out to look for the most a\u00fastral deer in the world: two families of huemules strolled carefree at a short distance.<\/p>\n

For\u00a0Leyla S\u00e1nchez<\/strong>, a\u00a0resident of Puerto Ingeniero Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez<\/strong>, this exploratory visit to learn about the huemul\u00a0\u201cwas to go much deeper, and to learn with people who are experienced in the subject, about the life of the huemul, the care that must be taken in terms of protection, the way of life, reproduction, feeding.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Joselyn Haro<\/strong>,\u00a0president of the Villa Cerro Castillo Neighborhood Council<\/strong>, has the same impressions, saying that\u00a0\u201cI enjoyed it very much because I came with my children. It was an experience I had never had before. We were able to ask questions and resolve all my doubts about the huemules\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is essential that people, children, youth, and adults, can get closer and learn more about the species and the things that happen in nature,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0says\u00a0Rody<\/strong>\u00a0after the activity.<\/p>\n

The objective of the\u00a0Friends of Cerro Castillo National Park program<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0to strengthen the link between the local community and the national park<\/strong>, helping to raise awareness of the importance of conserving these ecosystems by developing activities such as this one, which was part of the Environmental Education line, where the Rewilding Chile Foundation promotes learning about nature, conservation and the promotion of outdoor life.<\/p>\n

Carola Cerda, Director of Community Outreach at Fundaci\u00f3n Rewilding Chile<\/strong>, emphasized that these activities\u00a0\u201care part of the work that the foundation carries out in conjunction with Conaf, through the Wildlife program, where with this community outing we were able to learn about the behavior of the huemul.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
