Puerto Montt is the jumping-off point for traveling the Route of Parks of Patagonia and the main city and port town in southern Chile. Located at the northern tip of the Reloncaví Sound, it plays an important role in connecting various geographical areas of the country and is home to 30% of the inhabitants of the Los Lagos Region.
In 1852, the first German settlers began to arrive to the area. A year later, the city was officially founded. But its history goes back much, much earlier: 22 miles south, a course change in the Chinchihuapi Stream revealed a human settlement dating back 14,600 years. The discovery of this settlement, now named Monteverde, caused a radical re-imagining of current theories about prehistoric settlements in the Americas. The area continues to attract the interest of archaeologists and scientists from around the world.

Puerto Montt is located 649 miles south of Santiago and 12.5 miles south of Puerto Varas. You can reach the city on Route 5.
From Argentina, you can reach Puerto Montt via the Cardenal Antonio Samoré National Pass, located along Route 215, 47 miles from Puyehue.
Various bus routes connect Puerto Montt and Santiago (a journey of 12 hours, approximately), and buses also travel between Puerto Montt and various other towns, including Futaleufú and Chaitén.
El Tepual is the region’s main airport and offers daily flights to Santiago and other cities, including Balmaceda and Punta Arenas.
The La Paloma Aerodrome offers regular flights to various cities in the south of Chile, including Chaitén and Melinka.

Alerce Andino National Park is a must-see destination in the Los Lagos Region, with rare alerce trees that are over 3,000 years old and over 50 lakes surrounded by native forest.
This park is part of the World Biosphere Reserve of Temperate Rainforests of the Austral Andes.
Located south of Puerto Montt, Pumalín Park is home to millenary alerce (Fitzroya) trees and offers more than a dozen trails for exploring landscapes ranging from temperate rainforest to glaciers.

La Ruta de las Tradiciones
During January, local communities host the «Route of Traditions,» one of the most important local festival circuits in the south of Chile, which is celebrated on different dates in 28 communities that lie within the Puerto Montt Municipality.
